Are there times when you feel hopeless, out of control and all your self help motivation disappears? If so, at those times which end of the spectrum do you relate most do? Putting your head under the pillow and hiding from the world or do you stand up and declare–this situation is not going to beat me–and continue on your chosen path. Whatever end of the spectrum you fall on, the most important thing to remember is that your attitude is everything. Keep in mind that, no matter how awful situation seems, you have the last word about how you will react and how the situation will affect you.

Here are three steps that will support you even if you think the pillow method is your only choice.

1. I know it’s easier said than done, and it even may seem too much like all that new age stuff you’ve trying to avoid, but the first step to keeping your head out from under the pillow is to identify the positive aspects of the situation.

Even though it impossible in the moment there are always aspects of any situation that you can interpret as positive. Could you find a lesson in the situation? Is there something that you could do now that if not for this situation you would have never considered? The list of questions you can ask yourself goes on and on. Pinpoint the questions to ask and start asking them. Finding the good in seemingly bad situations is the first step in keeping any self help motivational live.

2. Once you can even see the slightest glimmer of hope then it’s time to dig underneath your worry and concern us and identify the source. Under every concern there is a deeply held value not being experienced.

So step number two is to identify the thoughts that are causing you worry. As an example, let’s say that you just heard your company is going make some changes and there will be layoffs. The thought you discover that is causing you worry is: “How will I feed myself if I get laid off.” Within this concern are values you hold dear. Most likely in a situation like this you would value, predictability, safety, and most likely self-respect.

Now that you’ve identified these values you can move on to step number three.

3. Now the question becomes, how can I experience what I value in this situation? The next step is to identify at least one action you can take to experience something you value in this situation. Could you ask the boss if you’re one of the people who are getting laid off? Might you look in the want ads to see if there are jobs available in your field? Is it time to reflect and see if there’s something that you’ve always wanted to do that now may be the time to explore?

Being in action regardless how small the action, is the surest way we know to keep your head out from under the pillow and moving in the direction you want to go. This kind of self help motivation won’t fail you if you use it, and remember your attitude is everything!
