Self Help Books – Finding the Right Solution to Any Problem

The word self help has a stigma associated with it. It implies that the person using it is either weak minded or has some sort of character flaw.

So when people think of reading self help books, they usually think of reading them to overcome flaws in their personalities, self-esteem, or confidence.

This is why people stay away from or hate to admit that they are using these tools; because they don’t want to admit or let others know there is a flaw in them.

However, there is much more to self help books than that. Although these tools can help you smooth over character flaws and deficiencies in your personality, its effects are not limited to just this area.

You can use self help books to help you improve other areas of yourself and your life.

Self Help Books Give You the Skills to Succeed

None of us are perfect, and none of us are born with the exact knowledge of how to handle every situation we are put in.

In addition, different circumstances call for different set of skills. In a class setting, good studying and note taking skills are required to perform well. In an atmosphere with aggressive and rebellious people, strong assertiveness skills are needed. In certain jobs or positions of authority, effective problem solving skills are critical.

All of us need a good balance of these skills to move through life.

But when we fall short in any one or more of these areas, the limitation can significantly hinder our effectiveness. If strong enough, it can hold a tight grip on us and prevent us from living the life we desire.

This is why self help books are so important.

They fill in the gaps in those areas of our lives we did not learn in school, pick up from our parents, or develop growing up. More importantly, they give us the skills we so desperately need to make our life a success.

Self Help Books Give You the Strength to Overcome Obstacles

Traveling on the road of life, you will encounter road blocks. There is no denying that.

You may face the challenge of finding a new job, confront an illness like depression or obesity, or encounter some other obstacle that makes your life dreadful.

Too often I see people encounter road blocks, and instead of finding ways to maneuver around them, they simply resign. They accept that either they can’t rise above the obstacle or doing so would be too difficult.

In essence, the obstacle becomes a heavy ball they chain themselves to – which restricts not only how fast, but how far they can go in life.

This is unfortunate, because with the right knowledge and proper guidance, anyone can learn to overcome any hurdle life throws at them. Whatever problem you are facing, there are many self help books at your disposal that can help guide you out of your difficulty.

Others have faced the same problems you are facing right now, and using the right tools, they have found a way to overcome their adversity.

And so can you!

As you can see, self help books do more than simply improve self-esteem and confidence. They give you the skills you need to be better, stronger, and smarter. More importantly, they guide you through obstacles that enable you to enjoy a happier, more successful, and fulfilled life.

So the next time you are looking to gain expertise or are confronting a challenge, don’t be too shy or too proud to look to self help books for answers. I guarantee you will find the answers you need and will be steered in the right direction – a direction that will eliminate any confusion about what you want and how to get it.

Why Self-Help Books Just Don’t Work

Most of us have experienced the feeling of excitement and hope when purchasing a new self-help book. You know the one. It’s the widely popular book that has spent months on the best-seller’s list and the one that all of your friends are reading.

You may have even spent a considerable amount of time underlining all the key passages and taking notes. By the end of the book you might even feel very hopeful about life and determined to make some changes. But after a couple of weeks you are back to where you started before you bought the book.

So, what happened?

You are not alone. Ninety-seven percent of people who follow self-help information do not succeed.

The best-kept secret about self-help books is that many of their theories are untested and widely exaggerated. There is one book on the New York Times Best Seller List that proclaims that if you just think of the things you want, you will attract them to you. If only life was that simple!

It is these kinds of messages that often lead to disappointment and frustration, leaving readers to wonder what is wrong with them rather than analyzing what might be wrong with self-help theories and advice they are reading. So, the cycle continues…people keep on buying more books until they are ‘fixed.’

Don’t get me wrong, not all self-help books are bad. However, there are many that are purely after a big piece of the $8 billion dollar self-help industry. What I (and many others) find the most frustrating are books that are filled with lofty visualization or positive techniques without any steps to create a concrete, step-by-step plan to accomplish goals/bring about real life change.

What is often left out of many of these books is the sheer amount of effort it takes to actually bring about long-lasting change in one’s life. No book, no matter how good its theories and advice can instantly change your life (although some make this promise!).

Most of the self-help industry is based on the fantasy that after achieving your dreams you will be happy. And who doesn’t want to be happy? The fact is that even if you are able to cross off everything on your life’s to-do list, you still won’t achieve lasting happiness. This is something that is rarely mentioned in self-help books, as what sells is the fantasy that you, indeed, can have everything you want and be happy.

Self Help Hypnosis – Tune Yourself to Success With Self Help Hypnosis

Hypnosis has many applications and it has been used for centuries. Some records indicate hypnosis has been studied since at least the 18th century. Some history records have even suggested that it had been practiced as far back as the ancient Egyptians.

Today you can see hypnosis has been used by both entertainers and healers. You can see stage hypnotists get a group of people on stage to do goofy things; there are even hypnotists working with homicide detectives to account for past lives or incidences. Some medical centers use hypnosis as a treatment for patients who suffer from chronic pain.

Undoubtedly, we can also use hypnosis for self help; to empower ourselves for success. In self help hypnosis, you will hear the term ‘hypnotic trance’; which is a form of dissociation or a state of mind that allows you to focus on positive events and dissociate from negative emotions.

When you are in that state, you are actually in direct contact with the unconscious; which is where your emotions are generated. So through self help hypnosis, you can learn to influence the unconscious mind to let go of negative emotions and focus on the positive emotions like happiness, joy and peace in life.

A more simple way to explain the benefit of self help hypnosis is as follow…

Imagine your mind is like a radio. If you are listening to a song from a radio that is out of tune, how does it sound like? Yes, you will hear a lot of noises and chatters that are interfering with the song. You will want to adjust the radio to a perfect tune so that you can enjoy the music or song. Right?

That’s the main benefit of using self help hypnosis to tune yourself to success! You can use the many techniques to help you tune your mind to a more positive things or emotions and get rid of negative emotions. Therefore, your mind only focuses on things that are important in life rather than dwelling on something that could potentially drain out your energy.

Also, hypnosis is often used as adjunct treatments for weight loss and stop smoking. I say “adjunct treatment” because it’s only effective as an aide in helping you to obtain that perfect tune for success. Healthy diet and regular exercise are still the best ingredients for weight loss. And your own desire to quit smoking is the best ingredient to stop smoking.

Depression Self Help Group

When I was young life seemed grand and I would never have imagined I would be in for the ride I have had. I had the perfect little family from an outside perspective with a well educated father, a stay at home mother, and two healthy siblings. My father made a decent living and my mother was a great wife. The road ahead was brightly lit and my early childhood was blissful.

Sadly, that all changed about the time when I was four years old. You see, that was when my grandmother finally got enough of my grandfather’s abuse and decided to take her own life. She was 43 years old. My mother was only 26. Add to that that my mother had just buried her younger brother two years before and it was a recipe for disaster. My mother developed full blown bipolar depression and completely withdrew from the world. Somehow after nearly a month tucked away in my parent’s bedroom my mother emerged what seemed to be her old self.

Fast forward four more years through the good times, a better job for my father, a new house, etc and everything still seemed quite nice right up until the time it happened. When I was eight years old I went to the 2nd grade without a care in the world. Unfortunately when I came home things were very different. My mother had attempted suicide and was still in the hospital. When she came home a few days later she was different. I don’t know that she was ever the same after that actually. I was too young to remember what had kept things together for the last four years but whatever it was had stopped working and my mom was a wreck. She spent the next few years battling her depression in and out of hospitals and on a grocery list of prescription medication. She wanted to be happy so bad but just couldn’t find the answers she searched for. Through all the treatments and medications one thing my mother was never a part of was a depression self help group. She was always guided by health care professionals in her treatment.

Looking back I wonder if it would have made a difference, even a small one. You see, many mental health specialists will tell you that having emotional support can be the biggest key to successfully fighting depression. I don’t really think my mother had that most of those years. The time apart and her illness destroyed my parent’s marriage and it was many years before my mother and father spoke again. When they finally did reunite my father passed away shortly thereafter. My mother’s only family was her abusive father and younger sister who was in and out of prison and her children. We were too young to fully understand what was going on. It saddens me now to think how alone she must have felt with such a burden to carry and I wish she had known or been able to be a part of a depression self help group where she could have experience true empathy from people who understood what she was going through.
